A Wonderful Lady

We came back from vacation to not such good news - Nanny aka Kate Bennett aka Phillip's grandmother had taken a turn for the worse and was not going to make it.  So of course we headed straight to her house when we made it to Douglasville.  By that point Hospice had already been called in and were watching over her.  She looked very sick however she looked very peaceful as she laid their in her bed.  We visited with her for quite a while and then we left to go pick up the Twins.  We knew as we left it was a matter of time before she would be gone and she actually made it until about two in the morning and then she passed.  She was 93 years old and she had lived a good life.  She wasn't sick, she didn't suffer, she had her mind completely, she was fine one day and then really just gone the next.  If you have to go I would say this is the way I would have wanted to do it.  She will really be missed by everyone that knew her.  She was just a wonderful lady.  She always had something positive say.  She either commented on your clothing, shoes, the event she was attending, the kids, whatever...  It was always something nice and sweet.  The Twins are really going to miss her.  Up until the past few years we would eat dinner over at her house every Sunday and the kids as well as Nanny really loved this time together.  They could play and she would just watch them.  It was the sweetest thing to watch her watch them play.  She always had a smile on her face and you just knew she was taking it all in and enjoying every moment of it.  I think Blakely has taken after her in a few ways - 1. she loves shoes just as Nanny did and 2. she loves to dance just as Nanny did and 3. Blakely is named after her Blakely Bennett.  In June, Nanny attended Blakely's dance recital and you could just see how proud of her she was as she watched her.  It was the sweetest thing.  She also loved Drew so much- even though he was often shy towards her and a little harder to warm up to.  She was proud of everyone in the family and their accomplishments.  Again she will really be missed but I am glad that we have all the great memories of her to think back on from all the dinners, weddings, vacations, etc... that we spent together.  Of course this has opened a whole can of worms - "questions" at our house from before the funeral until now.  We had to sit the twins down and really explain the whole process them.  We had to discuss with them the whole funeral thing and that when we go you are going to see Nanny and it is going to look like she is just sleeping but she is really not going to be there and so and so on.  Some questions were kind of hard to answer but overall I think the kids did very well.  On their birthday Quinn got them balloons when we went bowling and on our way home they wanted to know if when we got home could we please cut them and send them up to Nanny.  So that is exactly what we did.  I couldn't believe selfish 5 year olds would even think about that let alone actually do it but they did and it was the sweetest thing.  They have also said things like "Do you think Nanny is sleeping on that comfy cloud right there?" "Do you think she is playing with Abby in heaven?"  It is so sweet to listen to them talk about her.  I know they probably won't remember much about her but I am glad they got the chance to get to know her.  She was a wonderful lady!
